Soulaima Gourani is ambassador in the organization De Anbragtes Vilkår that is speaking on behalf on children under foster home care. As a former foster home child, both in an orphanage and in a foster home, Soulaima knows of the many challenges a child put in foster care experiences.
Around 1 percent of all children and teenagers in Denmark don’t live with their parents but in foster care. It has been like that for the last 30-40 years. In 2010 that was equivalent to 12000 children and teenagers from 0-17. Amongst adults roughly 6 percent have at some point in their upbringing been placed in foster care.
Some children have been in foster care for years while others for shorter periods of time. Among the oldest foster care children (15-17 year olds) approx. half have been in foster care for more than 3 years while a quarter have been so for more than seven years.
