Are you a late bloomer?

You don’t think you’ve “peaked” in your life yet, do you? There are many different reasons why people don’t land on the right path until “later in life.” It is perfectly normal and may even be to your advantage to peak late in life, then if it happens earlier on. Typically, when you are young, you usually have more expectations and fewer experiences. Also, as you grow older, you gain more experience and have fewer expectations.

The optimal balance in life is to keep your expectations in check while developing your experiences. Once you stop looking ahead and focus on the present, that’s when life starts to begin. People over 25 and older accounted for roughly 40 percent of all college and graduate students. Take Louisiana, for example. Students older than 25 make up 28 percent of the University of Louisiana system’s 90,000-plus students[1]. Stay hungry for learning, no matter your age.

Do you feel old?

Do you know the type who just sits there talking about “little old me” when he or she is really only 50 years old? The body may become more fragile with age, but in fact, you become stronger in a number of other vital areas. People over the age of 50:

  • make more informed decisions when it comes to making choices because they’ve gained more knowledge and experience that they take into account several aspects.
  • generally, feel more satisfied with life and less stressed.

Negative emotions like stress and anger tend to decrease after the early 20s, while people over 50 are less dissatisfied. This may be due to changes in our living conditions or psychological changes in the way we see the world, and it might even be because of biology, such as changes in the brain’s chemistry or endocrine changes. Stress is usually the body’s way of responding to potentially hazardous or even lethal situations, so even if death is approaching with more rapid steps, our life experience may also help us to achieve a lower level of stress because we are better able to assess whether certain situations are dangerous to us. Your age isn’t really the major threat to your life – it’s your attitude towards it that is.

Illness, inactivity and lack of mental strength are the main problems we see as people age. Aging typically begins to take place in our ’20s, and our physical and mental capacity decreases if we don’t actively work to stay “fit.” The more you are active in the gym or even conversations, the more you’ll keep your brain sharp. By challenging the small grey brain cells and by keeping yourself in good physical shape, you can maintain your brain’s resilience. You will also reduce the risk of catching diseases that may threaten your brain’s functions.

It is commonly thought that as we age, we get worse at learning new things and retaining information. There is an abundance of prejudices concerning age and memory. For example, it has been proven and documented that people who master two or more languages acquire a sharper brain than people (with the same education) who use one language only. Mastery of knowledge does not have a time frame or age limit.

Today, you help decide your market value yourself, and it doesn’t necessarily have to decrease just because you grow older. It’s never too late to begin working on a new sport, an education or a new life. You can start over many times in your life.  The requirement for your body and brain is quite simple; Use it or lose it! Take Buster Martin, who lived until 102 years old, is a prime example. He was England’s oldest employee and also the country’s oldest marathon runner. He’s been seen running through the streets of London with his blue and red cap and big beard. Another example is Tyger Woods; at 43, Woods became the second-oldest winner of the Masters, behind Jack Nicklaus. Tiger Woods completed a comeback from personal and professional adversity and a decade-long championship drought that instantly returned him to the top of the sports world. There are millions of amazing motivational stories out there in the world. Allow yourself to become inspired by them and don’t let aging stop you from reaching your highest potential.
